PEPE Sierra Leone Promotes Healthy Eating Habits During Volunteer Week

Under the theme “Nutrition – Promoting Healthy Eating Habits Through the One Egg, One Child Campaign,” PEPE Sierra Leone held another edition of Volunteer Week, bringing together missionaries, volunteers, educators, coordinators, and families in an initiative focused on the holistic care of children. The purpose of this initiative was to contribute to children’s health and nutrition by encouraging the consumption of eggs as part of their regular diet.

Eggs are among the most nutritious foods for children. They provide high-quality protein, essential vitamins (A, D, and B12), minerals such as iron and selenium, and healthy fats that contribute to physical growth and brain development. Regular consumption of eggs helps strengthen the immune system, promotes healthy bone and muscle development, improves concentration and learning ability, and contributes to children’s overall well-being.

Parents and caregivers were encouraged to include eggs in their children’s meals. Even when it is not possible to offer them daily, providing one or two eggs per week can make a meaningful contribution to a more nutritious and balanced diet.

Throughout Volunteer Week, Area Coordinators supervised the implementation of the activities in their respective regions, encouraging community participation and ensuring that the campaign’s objectives were achieved. Missionary Educators conducted awareness sessions with parents and community members, sharing guidance on healthy eating habits and highlighting the importance of proper nutrition during early childhood.

In the PEPE units, Unit Coordinators organized the “One Egg, One Child” activity, providing children with a special moment of care and learning. Each child received one boiled egg, while their families were encouraged to continue this healthy habit at home. The program also included songs, prayer times, and health education activities, making the experience both meaningful and welcoming for all participants.

The campaign produced encouraging results. Children enthusiastically participated in the activities and enjoyed a nutritious meal, while many parents committed themselves to regularly providing eggs for their children, even if only once or twice a week. In addition, the initiative strengthened collaboration among volunteers, educators, and coordinators, increasing community engagement and raising awareness about healthy eating habits.

More than a nutrition campaign, Volunteer Week reaffirmed PEPE Sierra Leone’s commitment to the holistic care of children and to transforming lives through education, love, and Christian service. After all, when a child is cared for in every aspect of life, we are sowing hope for both the present and the future.
