Haiti, with nearly 12 million inhabitants, is a neighboring country to the Dominican Republic. Both share the same island in the Caribbean region. Due to the severe humanitarian crisis, many families are emigrating to the Dominican Republic in search of better quality of life and protection. The current situation deprives about 200,000 children of the right to education, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Currently, two out of three Haitian children need humanitarian aid, according to a new report supported by the UN. We are reaching children from these families with PEPE.
Offering a space of hope for these children, we have inaugurated a new unit in the northern Dominican Republic, in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. It is a PEPE unit that will work exclusively for the Haitian community. Activities began in March with 40 Haitian children.
We are putting into practice the theme of Inclusion in the PEPE Network, turning our attention to the children of Haiti and diving into a world of need, precariousness, and indifference, where the children have not found an answer in their own country.
We want these children to feel loved, protected, and valued in PEPE, and for the doors to remain open throughout the country to welcome more Haitian children. Do not forget to pray for the children of Haiti; they need to know Jesus, they need PEPE!
